S.T.E.A.M.

The S.T.E.A.M. Program (Skills & Tools for Emotions Awareness & Management) was created and developed in 1999 by K-W Counselling Services in consultation with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. This school-based program is designed to assist elementary school children (K-8) who have difficulties managing their emotions, and as a result, controlling their behaviors.

It is a proactive, environmental-level intervention response to the behavioral problems identified in schools, and benefits children to become more successful in managing their behaviors at school and at home. Parents, teachers, principals, and community social workers collaborate to help children identify underlying feelings and thoughts that affect the choices they make.

The overall program goals are:

  • to support children in school to identify and effectively manage emotions;
  • to strengthen each child’s self esteem and increase his/her self - confidence.
