My kids are always watching television!

Dear Deb,

My kids are always watching television?  What other exciting activities could we all be doing?

Signed,
Sarah

Dear Sarah,

We all have our “favorite” shows we can’t seem to miss, but if we are willing to play and have fun as an adult, children are more likely to join us.  Give yourself permission to get silly and have fun together.  Here are some ideas.

  • Water, Water, Water - kids love water games (outside or in!) Use funnels, soap, straws, eggbeaters and play in the sink or turn on a sprinkler and run outside.  (Don’t forget your towels!)
  • Made a band – from  kitchen instruments and put on their favorite music.
  • Freeze tag – is always a favorite at any age where you have lots of room to move.
  • Bake Cookies – go on a shopping trip if you need ingredients and get your children to hold the list.  Let them have fun adding all the ingredients and stirring up a storm.  (Only adults by the oven though).  Enjoy the sweet smell of your creation and the teamwork involved.  High Fives!
  • Wish lists - Cut up old magazines and have your children create a collage of their wishes and dreams.  It’s always fun to have goals to aspire towards and you may be able to start shopping early for a birthday or holiday gift.
  • Big Machines – If your children like the action of construction, go for a drive and watch the big machines at work.
  • Dress Up – Let their imagination soar as they become their own favorite princess or action hero!
  • Tents – Create a private getaway by using couch cushions, old shower curtains or blankets.  Some children will spend hours here!
  • Get Messy! – Paint with tooth brushes, shaving cream, or other safe products in your home.  Go outside or put a shower curtain down to cover the floor.
  • Pillow Fun – The old standby…as long as we are gentle and respectful, who doesn’t like a ‘pillow fight’.

If they still say NO – suggest cleaning the house together. It could actually be fun OR they may be more open to your other suggestions.

Here’s to lots of fun as a family!
